 The Illusion of Ownership: What Artists Must Control to Win

By Sos // Kingpaysos.blog

🎤 They told you you’d “own your sound.” But they didn’t say you’d rent your rights.

Most artists think owning their music just means “I made it, so it’s mine.” But the industry doesn’t care who made it. It only cares who controls it.

Control = power.

Power = freedom.

Freedom = real money.

Let’s break down the real keys to ownership so you don’t end up popular but powerless.

🎧 Masters vs. Publishing: Know the Difference

A lot of folks confuse masters with publishing, and that’s how they get finessed.

Masters = the actual recording (the mp3, the wave, the audio file).

Publishing = the songwriting, lyrics, melody, and composition.

You can lose one and still hold the other, but if you don’t control both, you’re not really free.

Example:

Drake might perform the song, but someone else wrote the hook? That’s publishing.

The label owns the audio they released? That’s the master.

If you sign a bad deal, they’ll own your masters and split your publishing down the middle… and that’s when you start hearing,

“I went platinum, but I’m still broke.”

✍️ Writer’s Share vs. Publisher’s Share: Here’s Where They Slice You

Publishing money is split into two parts:

Writer’s Share – Automatically yours as the songwriter.

Publisher’s Share – Can go to a publisher… or to you if you stay in control.

Labels and publishers will try to:

Own part of your publisher’s share, or worse…

Take admin control so they collect on your behalf, for a cut.

💡 The trap: You think you’re getting paid off your lyrics, but they’re getting 50% of every sync, placement, and licensing check.

🧾 Admin Deals: Keep Your Publishing Without Giving It Away

Want someone to help collect your publishing without owning it?

That’s where administration deals come in.

With a good admin deal:

YOU keep 100% ownership

THEY just collect and process your money (for 10–20%)

You get back-end royalties from Spotify, YouTube, international markets, etc.

This is how real indie artists build long-term bags.

It’s quiet money, but it adds up.

🚨 Bottom Line: If You Don’t Understand It, You’ll Never Own It

Here’s what every artist needs to get locked in:

📀 Fight for your masters — or negotiate a reversion (get them back in 3–7 years).

✍️ Control your publishing — or get an admin, not a publisher.

💰 Don’t just split credit, split the checks — know your writer’s vs. publisher’s share.

💬 Final Words From Sos

Ownership ain’t about ego. It’s about leverage.

It’s about making sure that 10 years from now, when your song randomly goes viral again or gets picked up for a movie, you’re the one who eats.

So before you chase the co-sign, the clout, or the label check…

Ask yourself: will I OWN this? Or just be a guest in my own house?
